KARACHI, March 24: Scores of men, women and children staged a big protest demonstration outside the press club here on Monday against the US invasion of Iraq, heavy bombardment on Iraqi civilians and loss of precious lives in the war.
The demonstration was held under the auspices of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal which was addressed by the MMA legislators, Abdul Sattar Afghani and Muhammad Hussain Mahenti.
The protesters torched US and British flags and effigies of President Bush and Premier Tony Blair.
Holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the US-led forces and the war, they denounce invasion of Iraq and called upon international community to play its role in halting inhuman treatment with the innocent people of Iraq.
The demonstrators raised slogans condemning the allied forces’ barbaric bombardment on Iraq and massacre of its people. They demanded an immediate halt to the war.
Addressing the rally, Mr Afghani and Mr Mahenti lashed out at the US for “acting like a blind elephant and trying to ravage every opponent country.”
They said: “Bush and Blair are international criminals.” They urged all the nations of the world to forge unity for appropriate action against the aggressors.
They also urged the countrymen to, at least, boycott the products of US and British origin as well as those marketed by the multinational companies in order to cause economic loss to these countries.
Meanwhile, the MMA has asked Islamabad to play its role as a member of the UN Security Council in getting the war stopped through a resolution to be table at the specially called emergency meeting of the council.
Addressing a public meeting in PIB Colony, several MMA leaders described the way US and British warplanes were dropping deadly bombs and using other weapons of mass destruction as ‘intolerable’.
They also appealed to the OIC member states to convening an urgent meeting and act jointly for an immediate halt to the war.—PPI
