Anti-war protestors rally at final

JOHANNESBURG, March 23: A group of anti-war protestors dispersed peacefully after rallying outside the Wanderers Stadium where the World Cup final between Australia and India took place on Sunday.

“About 250 people participated in the protest. They later dispersed peacefully,” police spokesman Chris Wilken said.

Anti-War Coalition spokesman Trevor Ngwane said between 800 and 1,000 demonstrators took part in the action against the US-led war on Iraq, but SABC reporters and the police put the figure around 250.

Members of the Anti-War Coalition, an umbrella body of some 50 political and civil society bodies, donned placards stating “War is not the answer” and “Down with US greed”.

“The protestors also urged passing motorists to hoot to voice opposition against a war and we had a lot of people doing that,” Ngwane said.—AFP
