ISLAMABAD, March 22: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has said all political parties have the collective responsibility to strive for strengthening of democracy and democratic institutions in the country.

He was talking to MNAs Hamid Nasir Chattha, Mazhar Ahmad Qureshi, Muhammad Shah Khaggah, Gayan Chand Singh and Prof Mushtaq Victor, who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House here on Saturday.

He said only strict adherence to democratic norms and values could ensure continuity of the democratic system.

“Tolerance of dissent, which forms the bedrock of democracy, should in particular be promoted and protected,” he observed.

The prime minister said the government had no intention to curtail or circumscribe the freedom of expression in any manner.

“The opposition is free to air its views on all issues,” said the premier referring to its recent demonstrations over the issue of Iraq and its activities and statements about the LFO.

“This amply demonstrates our commitment to democratic principles,” he said, adding he expected the opposition to reciprocate in same spirit.

The prime minister discussed with the MNAs matters pertaining to conducting the business of parliament and asked them to take part in its proceedings according to the best of their abilities.

The prime minister also urged them to continue working for the welfare of their electorate.

The MNAs also briefed the prime minister about the present state of development schemes in their respective constituencies.

Mr Chattha, who is also leader of PML-J, exchanged views with the prime minister on the recent session of parliament and the overall political situation.

Mr Mazhar Qureshi and Mr Muhammad Shah requested the prime minister to sanction sui gas schemes for their constituencies and construction of link roads in certain areas. The prime minister assured them that these would be examined on merit.

Minority MNAs Gayan Chand Singh and Prof Mushtaq Victor apprised the prime minister of certain problems being faced by the minority communities in the country and put forward suggestions to promote intercommunal harmony.—APP
