Three MUET Employees issued show-cause

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 22: The Vice-Chancellor of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, Dr Abdur Rehman Memon, on Thursday issued show-cause notices to three employees of the university for taking part in “agitational and unscrupulous activities” and for working on the pattern of trade union.

Nusrat Hussain Channa, assistant security section, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Superintendent, directorate of finance and Syed Javed Ali Shah, data entry operator, have been asked to show cause within seven days why their services should not be terminated.

EMPLOYEES’ DENIAL: Nusrat Hussain Channa and Syed Javed Ali Shah, chairman and general secretary respectively of the Mehran University Employees Coordination Committee, have said they had not taken part in any illegal or trade union activities yet the vice-chancellor had issued them notices.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, they said by doing that the vice-chancellor had trampled over their fundamental human rights. They claimed that their only fault was that the office-bearers of the employees committee had submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor for the resolution of their problems.

They said they had announced that a seminar would be held on March 30 to highlight the problems of students, teachers and employees of the university as the vice-chancellor had refused to resolve the same. They said the vice-chancellor had retaliated by issuing show-cause notices to them.

TEACHERS: The general secretary of the Mehran University Teachers Association, Inam Bhatti, has said the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Abdur Rehman, is not prepared to solve the problems of teachers, students and university employees.

In a statement faxed to Dawn, he said a copy of the resolutions adopted by the executive council of the teachers association was submitted to him, seeking an interview before the meeting of the university syndicate.

Mr Bhatti said when he went to meet the VC on the given time, he was threatened. He said the tenure of the VC was about to expire on April 20 and Dr Rehman was trying to get his tenure extended.
