KARACHI: Man dies as acid falls on him; woman killed

KARACHI, March 22: A donkey-cart driver died when an open drum containing acid fell on him from a moving truck in Korangi Industrial Area on Saturday.
The donkey-cart driver, later identified as Asghar, aged 19, died on the spot. The truck sped off after the accident, witnesses told the police.
The body was sent to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre for autopsy.
DIE OF ASPHYXIATION: A policeman and his relation died when they inhaled poisonous gas in a well at a shanty town in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town on Saturday.
The police said a well went dry in the house of Abdus Sattar, a head constable posted at the Garden police lines. He and a distant relation of his, Mohammed Saeed, aged 30, went down into the well to dig it deeper to get water. Sattar’s neighbour Gulzar was also present in the well and he noticed that Sattar and Saeed had fallen unconscious. He called out to them but there was no response. Gulzar informed the police and the Edhi ambulance service.
Edhi volunteers and policemen brought the two unconscious men out of the well and rushed them to a hospital where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival. Sattar was 35 years of age.
SHOT DEAD: A man shot dead his mother-in-law at the latter’s house in Pirabad late Friday night.
Initial police investigations showed that Alam Sher married Zeenat Bibi’s daughter some months back. After a domestic quarrel, the daughter came to her her mother’s home.
On Friday Alam Sher, with his brother Alamgir, came to his mother-in-law’s house for reconciliation with his wife. He asked his mother-in-law to allow his wife to live with him. But the mother-in-law turned down Alam Sher’s request. This led to arguments between them. Alam Sher was provoked, and he shot his mother-in-law. Alam Sher and his brother escaped.
The police sent the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy and registered a murder case against Alam Sher and Alamgir. No arrest was reported till our going to press.
