Aqeel faces Asim in final

ISLAMABAD, March 21: Top seed Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafik moved into the final of the ET Memorial Invitation Tennis Tournament on Friday with victories in straight sets over their semifinal opponents at the PTF Complex.

Playing powerful tennis, Aqeel outplayed top junior player Shahzad Khan 6-1, 6-3 while Asim had to work hard in overcoming the challenge of Shahzad Samad Khan 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s singles semifinals, Mehvish Chishtie eliminated upcoming Saba Aziz 6-0, 6-1 to set up a clash with Zara Omer, who knocked out Anoosha Aslam 6-1, 6-1 in the other prefinal.

The boys singles final will see Tabish Raza and Zain Abbas vying for top honours after they beat their respective rivals.

Tabish defeated Changez Afridi 6-2, 6-3 in the first semifinal and then Zain overpowered Jawad Gardezi 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

The men’s final on Saturday will be played at the Margalla Tennis Club while the women’s and boys’ deciders will take place at the PTF Complex, organisers said.

Results (semifinals)

Mens singles: Aqeel Khan bt Shahzad Khan 6-1, 6-3; Asim Shafik bt Shahzad Samad Khan 6-2, 6-3.

Womens singles: Mehvish Chistie bt Saba Aziz 6-0, 6-1; Zara Omar bt Anoosha Aslam 6=1, 6-1.

Boys singles: Tabish Raza bt Changez Afridi 6-2, 6-3; Zain Abbas bt Jawad Gardezi 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
