Celtic, Boavista Lazio, Porto reach UEFA Cup semis

LONDON, March 21: Scottish champions Celtic stunned favourites Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield on Thursday to join Lazio and Portuguese pair Boavista and Porto in the semifinals of the UEFA Cup.

Lazio beat Besiktas 2-1 in Istanbul for a 3-1 aggregate victory, but both Portuguese clubs had to overturn 1-0 first leg defeats as Porto edged Panathinaikos 2-0 in Athens after extra time and Boavista beat Malaga 4-1 on penalties after a 1-0 win on the night.

However, the most eagerly-awaited of the quarterfinal second leg ties was on Merseyside where Liverpool, last month’s League Cup winners, were clearly fancied to go through after earning an away goal in last week’s 1-1 draw at Parkhead.

Results (Quarterfinals):

Liverpool 0 Celtic 2

Panathinaikos 0 FC Porto 2

Besiktas 1 Lazio 2

Boavista 1 Malaga 0

Semifinal draw: Celtic (SCO) v Boavista (POR); Lazio (ITA) v FC Porto (POR)
