Heavy losses for backers of favourites
LAHORE, March 19: Favourite backers suffered heavy losses when only one firm favourite obliged in a card of six events in the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races on Wednesday.
Punters rout began right from the opener when fancied chestnut gelding Lot Of Thanks ran off the board with jockey Khurrum Sheikh in the saddle.
After the race his owner-cum-trainer, Ayub Butt lodged a complaint before the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards against the rider for not allowing Lot Of Thanks to run on merit.
The stewards questioned the rider, who belied trainer’s assertion and the stewards gave benefit of doubt to Khurrum.
The race was won by long shot gelding Sun Of A Gold who outpaced Rambo Princess by three-fourth of a length.
Three-to-one chance bay colt Rocket stormed home to win the second race. He left fancied Seven Spades in his wake, who nosed out well-backed Easy Come Easy Go to third place.
The dark-fluke bay mare Silver Sweet caused the biggest upset of the day in the third race. Fancied Malook Star and equally backed Hot Press finished second and third, respectively.
Fancied bay mare Iram State won the fourth race and gave the only respite to punters. Time To Lead, Ghabra and Gently made up the frame.
Two-to-one second favourite Pistol Pete won the fifth and feature event defeating Morning Noor by four lengths. Prince Of Peace ran third.
Another long shot bay mare Home Maid pipped 60 to 100 favourite New Cannon on the finishing post to claim the sixth and last race of the day.
Jockey Qamar Zaman highlighted the day’s racing by bringing in a fine double through Iram State and Pistol Pete in the fourth and fifth race.
Trainer Raja Tehmasab Khan saddled two winners. He first sent out bay colt Rocket in the second race and then saddled Pistol Pete in the feature event. All races were contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.
