HARIPUR, March 18: As many as 422 uplift schemes worth Rs786.427 million are near completion in different areas of 44 union councils of Haripur district, and a number of other development projects amounting to Rs969.75 million, either funded by donors or by the provincial government, are in the pipeline, official sources told Dawn here on Tuesday.
The Haripur district assembly, which inherited a number of ongoing development projects under Khushhal Pakistan Programme (KPP), approved all these schemes during the fiscal period of 2001-2 and 2002-3.
A statistical break-up of allocations made by the district government from available financial resources received under different programmes for different community and infrastructure uplift projects, suggested that the district government which, though, faced criticism from the opposition benches for “appeasing its favourites of specific union councils out of proportion”, focused more on schemes like water supply, sanitation, irrigation, communication, education and health.
An informed source said for ongoing development schemes, Haripur district was disbursed a sum of Rs496.244 million. Out of which, he said, it received Rs23.43 million for 21 schemes under KPP-I, Rs38.602 under KPP-II for 48 schemes of roads and water supply which had been completed and Rs98.801 for 148 new schemes of KPP-III.
Under provincial government-funded Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), Haripur received Rs51.563 million for its four major schemes, including Rs22.206 million for under-completion District Headquarter Hospital Haripur, Rs5 million for carpeting of 10.74km Sirikot Gadwalian road, Rs24.357 million for two phased Kohala Bala to Pir Sohawa road.
From its own local funds, the district government approved 255 development schemes worth Rs99.25 million.
Likewise, for health sector Haripur received Rs216 million under Structural Adjustment Credit programme.
The NWFP government would facilitate improvement and standardisation of the existing THH Haripur, building of additional rooms, offices and equipment for the THH and 39 other health facilities of the district.
For the rehabilitation of educational institutions, Rs31.534 million were disbursed to the district government for 14 schemes for providing additional class rooms, setting up three new community schools, lab equipment and furniture, under three different programmes — President Programme, Educational Sector Reforms, and Social Action Programme. Furniture costing Rs7.3 million had already been provided to various schools of the district under the SAP programme, sources said.
