KARACHI: Accused in killing cases remanded

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 18: An alleged terrorist was remanded on Tuesday in police custody till March 25 in two new cases registered against him.

Abdul Wahab Afghani was on remand in the Imambargah Al Muntazar firing incident, which claimed nine lives, and the Subhan Bakery firing case in which two people were killed. During interrogation in police custody, he is alleged to have confessed his involvement in the PSO bomb blast and murder of journalist Sagheer Hussain Kazmi.

The accused was produced before Justice Shabbir Ahmed of the Sindh High Court, who is also the administrative judge for the anti-terrorism courts for Karachi division, under tight security on Tuesday afternoon. The judge allowed the police’s request for remand to facilitate further interrogation and investigation. A number of accused in the terrorist raids are absconding.

FRESH OATH PLEA: A division bench of the Sindh High Court adjourned the hearing of a writ petition seeking a direction for administration of a fresh oath to all superior court judges without exception.

As the petition came up for hearing before the bench comprising Justice Mohammed Roshan Essani and Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Deputy Attorney-General Nadeem Azhar Siddiqui sought time for submitting comments on behalf of the federal government. Granting the request, the bench adjourned the hearing to a date in office.

The petition, moved by Advocate Arif Ali, through Advocate Ibrahim Azmi, says the judges should be sworn in afresh under the 1973 Constitution after the restoration of constitutional rule.

COURT NOTICE: The Sindh High Court issued notices to the Pakistan Railways and another respondent on a petition alleging disappearance of a consignment of 200 mobile phone sets and about 50 batteries on their way from Karachi to Lahore.

The petitioner, a mobile phone dealer, alleged that he booked the consignment for transportation by the railways through a private cargo agent. It did not reach Lahore and apparently went missing somewhere on its way from Karachi. Inquiries addressed to the agent and the railways failed to elicit any response. A division bench issued notices to the railways and the agent for April 1.
