LAHORE, March 16: Spanish Ambassador Antonio Segura Moris has admitted that double standards are being adopted with regard to implementation of UN resolutions in various cases.

He was talking to reporters at the residence of ARD deputy information secretary Munir Ahmad Khan here on Sunday.

“It is because of the military and economic might of the United States that quick action is being taken against Iraq while Israel and Indian violations of Security Council resolutions are ignored,” he said.

Had some big power been involved in case of these two countries, the situation would have been different, he added.

If the United States decided to attack Iraq without UN Security Council’s approval, the Spanish government would not support it without its parliament’s nod, he maintained.

He, however, said that as his country had cordial relations with the Arabs, it would most likely support any resolution in the Security Council against Israel’s atrocities.

He denied the impression that most of the European states were against the attack on Iraq, arguing that out of the four European members of the Security Council, two were in favour and as many against the attack.

About the European parliament’s vote against the war, he said it did not enjoy any legal authority and the verdict could not carry anything but moral pressure.
