KARACHI: Mausoleum’s land for road project refused

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 16: The Quaid-i-Azam Mazar Management Board (QMMB) has decided not to give nearly three acres of its land to the city government for expansion and remodelling of the Purani Numaish crossing.

According to sources, the city government wanted a small patch of land at the corner of Shahrah-i-Quaideen to widen the entrance to the MA Jinnah Road.

The sources said that another patch of a couple of acres of land was needed for carving a 100-foot-wide road to connect Nizami Road and the Shahrah-i-Quaideen, so that vehicles coming from the Nizami Road could go to Shahrah-i-Quaideen directly.

The city government officials briefed the QMMB about the land requirement, but could not satisfy them and their request was turned down. The road was later widened by remodelling and shortening the surrounding area of a traffic kiosk.

In reply to a query, Mohammad Arif of the QMMB told Dawn that they had formed a committee on the request, headed by Brig Iftikhar Haider of the Corps-5 headquarters.

The officials of the city government’s traffic engineering bureau briefed the committee, after which Brig Iftikhar was of the opinion that there was no need to give the land to the city government.

He maintained that from the Nizami Road the vehicles could move to Shahrah-i-Quaideen from the 150-foot-wide road, which has already been constructed and was only to be connected with the Nizami Road.
