MacGill puts NSW on top
BRISBANE, March 15: Test leg-spinner Stuart MacGill spun New South Wales into a commanding position over defending champions Queensland on the second day of the Interstate Shield cricket final here on Saturday.
NSW were almost out of reach after two days of cricket when MacGill wrecked Queensland with a haul of 5-16 in 32 balls.
Queensland were knocked over for 84 in their first innings, avoiding the follow-on by just one run.
NSW, who scored 282 in the first time at bat, were 166 for four in their second innings at stumps for an overall lead of 364 runs with six wickets in hand and three days to play.
Steve Waugh (47 not out) and Mark Waugh (20 not out) were building NSW’s lead to match-winning proportions.
Waugh’s twin brother Mark admitted this could be his last first-class match.
MacGill earlier bowled NSW into a strong position with three wickets in five balls and narrowly missed out on a hat trick in Queensland’s first innings collapse.—AFP
