Zimbabwe v Kenya factbox

Published March 12, 2003

FORMWATCH: Zimbabwe, amazingly, still have a mathematical chance of reaching the last four, yet they have only beaten Namibia, by the D/L method, and Holland to date. A forfeit against England and a wash-out against Pakistan did the rest. Victory over Kenya and Sri Lanka, however, could be enough.

Kenya’s win over Sri Lanka was impressive, while their second Test scalp, against Bangladesh, was expected. Having reduced India to 23 for three, another shock looked possible under the Cape Town lights but the African side lacked the penetration to build on that early advantage.

HEAD-T0-HEADS: Zimbabwe have never lost to Kenya, winning 12 times with two no-results. With both sides still in the Super Six running, it is hard to back Kenya but they are probably the most enthusiastic team of the tournament, while Zimbabwe are the most unsettled. Zimbabwe beat Kenya in the 1996 and 1999 tournaments, both times by five wickets.

PREVIOUS WORLD CUPS: Zimbabwe have been ever present since 1983, when they shocked Australia with a win at Trent Bridge. Their greatest performance came in 1999, when they beat South Africa and India to reach the Super Six stage.

Kenya are in their third World Cup. They went out in the first round in both 1996, despite a shock victory over West Indies, and 1999, when they did not win a game.—Reuters
