KARACHI: Death penalty for karo-kari killing urged

KARACHI, March 11: Speakers at a meeting here on Monday demanded that the murders committed under the pretext of honour killing (karo-kari) be termed acts of terrorism and death penalty be given to the perpetrators.

They were speaking at the meeting, organized by the Sindhi Nari Tehreek in connection with the International Women’s Day, at Sachal Goth.

The speakers were Abdul Khalique Junejo, Mehnaz Rahman, Saeeda Chandio, Fauzia Mehar, Amna Soomro, Marvi Junejo, et al.

They also demanded that the jirga system be abolished and laws be formulated to try those who organized jirgas, which, according to them, were a parallel legal system in the country.

They said women faced discriminations at every stage of their life. She was not provided with equal opportunities in education, health, employment, etc. They emphasized the need to change social attitudes.

The speakers said both men and women should struggle together for the rights of women as man and woman complemented each other.
