KARACHI, March 10: MAQS showing excellent hands with 86 Victory Points (VPs) clinched Weekend Swiss Bridge Tournament at Aslam Memorial Hall held on Sunday.
Spearheaded by Maqbool Ahmed, Khalid Zaki, Mahmood Siddiqui and F.A.Naeem emerged winner after winning all the four matches in style.
Starting their journey to the top slot, MAQS first outpaced Friends 24-06, then Attackers in a close finish 16-14.
Shamsi also gave them tough time but they managed 19-11 victory. In the last round Chandna faced MAQS but fell to their own aggression, conceding 21-9 VPs.
Arzoo stared poorly against Mahmood IV 11-19, then again a disappointing show against Sprinters 14-16. However, they put up spirited fight against Lipton in the third round netting 22-08 and a clean victory of 25-05 against Greens in the last round elevated them to second place.
Nasim Arzoo, Mubashir Puri, A.K. Bhurgari and Mushahid played for Arzoo. They collected 72 VPs.
Candyland experimented various combinations. They won all the four matches, but all narrowly, thus occupied third berth with a score of 69 VPs. Besides their regular two pairs of Hamid-Zia and Khalid-Askari, Imran Jaka and Raees also added in the team.
Earlier in the pairs contest, 32 pairs were seated in two houses. In the seniors’ group, Ziaullah Baig-Hamid Mohiuddin reached at the apex with 64 percent score, followed closely by Azhar-Ozair 62% and Arzoo-Dr.Sarfraz 59 percent.
In the Green House, Janbaz Jafri pairing with Wazir Durrani proved too good and finished on top with a score of 62 percent. Far behind them finished Rubina-Hayee Tariq Zafar on the second position with 58.60 and veteran pair of M.G. Siddiqui-S.P. Jamal 57.15 percent.—APP
