HAFIZABAD, March 10: An alleged proclaimed offender was killed in an encounter with police near Muradian Wali while his two accomplices were arrested on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference here, SP Saeed Akhtar Bharwana said the gang, headed by Shahid Virk, was involved in many murder, dacoity and highway robbery cases.

He said they robbed a school teacher, Aamir Hayat, on Saturday near Chak Ghazi.

He said on Monday they deprived one Akram, an employee of a pesticides company, of his motorcycle, cash and wristwatch near Ahmadpur Chattha.

He informed police at Chak Chattha post which chased the robbers and stopped them at the bridge of a drain at Muradian Wali.

SP Bharwana said a contingent of Saddar police under his supervision reached the spot. The criminals opened fire on the police party which returned the compliment. He said in the shootout that followed, ring leader of the gang Shahid Virk was killed on the spot while his accomplices Jamshed and Ishaq were arrested. However, their fourth accomplice managed to escape from the scene.

The SP claimed that Shahid Virk of Chani Virkan, Nowshera Virkan, had killed 12 participants in a marriage party in 1998 over an old enmity.—APP
