HYDERABAD, March 9: The Sindh government will take up the water issue in the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

This was stated by the Sindh minister for law, parliamentary affairs and human rights, Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmad, while speaking at a reception hosted by the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture at the agriculture complex here on Sunday.

He said it would be ensured to distribute water under the 1991 Water Accord.

He said the people of Sindh depended on agriculture for their livelihood and added this was the reason the Sindh Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution to refer the water issue to the CCI.

The minister said he was aware of the growers’ problems and would make efforts to get the same resolved.

Welcoming the minister, Sindh Chamber of Agriculture president Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah highlighted problems of the agriculture sector and expressed the hope implementation of the 1991 Water Accord would be ensured.

Earlier, the Sindh minister visited the office of daily Mehran and inspected different sections.

He said the daily had rendered great services in the field of journalism and hoped it would continue its efforts to protect the rights of the people of the province.

MINISTER: The Sindh minister, Naeem Ishtiaq, on Saturday met office-bearers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement labour division at the party’s zonal office and assured them problems of the activists would be resolved.

Mr Ishtiaq, who has not been given a portfolio yet, said due to inefficiency and corruption, institutions had lost their credibility.

He said the Sindh government was striving to restore the efficiency and credibility of the institutions.

He said many development schemes were being carried out in Hyderabad.

VC CRITICIZED: The Mehran University Teachers Association (MUTA) has criticized the vice-chancellor for ignoring recommendations of statutory bodies and administrative departments.

At a meeting held here on Sunday, the executive council of the MUTA said the vice-chancellor was making unilateral decisions.

The meeting also condemned the vice-chancellor for delaying decisions on important issues as well as routine matters.

It pointed out the tenure of the vice-chancellor would end in April and called for early appointment of a new vice-chancellor.

The association deplored there was no ambulance service for 250 families living in the university colony and despite repeated requests by the chairman, colony affairs, students and employees, the ambulance facility had been denied by the vice-chancellor.

It demanded of the Sindh governor, Higher Education Commission, university syndicate and other authorities concerned to take notice of the matter.

The meeting suggested daily meetings should be arranged between the vice-chancellor and teachers so that problems of the university could be immediately resolved.

It warned office-bearers of the association would observe a protest before syndicate members if issues of upgradation, move-over, confirmation and appointments were not included in the agenda of the syndicate meeting, scheduled for March 29.

It also called for resolving genuine problems of university students and low-paid employees.

The meeting decided to take out a march on March 13 against a possible US attack on Iraq.
