FAISALABAD, March 7: Five people were killed and two others sustained injuries when a car collided head-on with a wagon on the service road of Motorway in Chak Jhumra on Thursday night.

Five friends, including Naseer Ahmed Rahi, brother of ex-MPA and Punjab Millat Party secretary-general Fazal Hussain Rahi, were on their way to Faisalabad from Lahore by car (LHZ-1214). Near Gartal village, the car driver at high speed lost control over the steering due to which it crashed into the oncoming wagon (FDW-9186). Consequently, all car riders — Naseer Ahmed Rahi, Muhammad Zahid, Hamid Ali, Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Saeed died instantly while Muhammad Asif and Gull Hussain received serious head and chest injuries. They were shifted to Allied Hospital where their condition was stated to be stable. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their heirs after autopsy.

HOLD-UP: The general hold-up has been declared in the district to avert any untoward incident during Muharram.

All Muharram related programmes are being held under tight security arrangements of police and other law enforcement agencies. The DIG, the DPO and other police high-ups are seen patrolling the city urban and rural areas along with heavy police contingents.

Armed policemen have been deputed around sensitive points including mosques, imambargahs, general bus stand, wagon stops, commercial centres and government offices.

All the private vehicles are being checked through detectors before entry and departure from the premises of district courts. Shopkeepers of eight bazaars and adjoining commercial centres have been directed to close their shops after maghrib prayers.

COMMITS SUICIDE: A jobless youth, Najeebullah, committed suicide on Friday by taking poison in Jaranwala.
