US steel exemptions

WASHINGTON, March 4: A top US industry executive said on Tuesday he expected the Bush administration to exempt only a small amount of additional foreign steel from the US tariffs imposed one year ago.

But at the same time, US Steel Corp. Chairman Thomas Usher said he did not expect the administration to extend the tariffs to any additional countries, as a number of steel industry companies requested earlier this year.

Usher and other steel industry executives spoke with reporters on the eve of the one-year anniversary of President George W. Bush’s decision to slap tariffs of up to 30 per cent on a huge chunk of imported steel.—Reuters
