BOSTON, March 3: Reigning Olympic champion Stacy Dragila of the United States set a world indoor record in the women’s pole vault here Sunday, clearing 4.78m to win at the US Indoor Athletics Championships.
Dragila broke the mark of 4.77m set February 21 by Russia’s Svetlana Feofanova at the British Grand Prix Euro Series event in Birmingham, England.
The victory qualified Dragila, who missed most of last season with a foot injury, for the World Indoor Championships on March 14-16 in Birmingham, when she and Feofanova will likely have a showdown to decide indoor supremacy.
Feofana grabbed the world record just over a year ago but Dragila had vowed to reclaim the honor before their world showdown.
Two-time world champion Dragila cleared 4.40m to defeat runner-up Kellie Suttle for a seventh US indoor crown, then handled 4.60m on her second try and set her sights on the world record.
Dragila missed on her first bid at the record and grazed the bar on her second attempt but watched the bar stay up to give her the mark. Dragila made three tries at 4.88m (16 feet) but failed each time.
Regina Jacobs, 39, captured her second title of the meet, winning the 3,000m in 8:52.57 with Shayne Culpepper second at 8:56.26.
