KARACHI: Police kill 3 suspects in ‘encounters’

KARACHI, March 3: Two suspected bandits were shot dead and their accomplice was injured in Orangi Extension on Monday, in what the police claimed an encounter.

The police said three armed men entered Naeem Akhtar’s house in sector 11 at Mominabad, Orangi Town, held the occupants of the house hostage at gunpoint, collected cash and jewellery and escaped in a rickshaw.

Naeem Akhtar informed the police on “15” following which the Orangi Extension police spotted the rickshaw in Shamsi Colony.

As a police mobile chased the rickshaw, the suspected bandits opened fire on the police in which a constable, Bakht Rawan, was injured.

The police said they returned the fire killing two suspects who had been identified as Farman and Yousuf Raza, residents of Qasba Colony. The third suspect who was injured in the firing had been identified as Farzand Ali, resident of Ittehad Colony.

The dead and injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where post-mortem on the two bodies was performed.

The police claimed to have recovered three pistols, the looted cash and jewellery from the possession of the alleged bandits.

Another suspected bandit was shot dead in an alleged encounter at Defence Housing Authority.

The police said two unidentified men were busy looting a man near Behbood Centre in the vicinity of Kalapul, when two policemen riding a motorcycle noticed the robbery.

As the police challenged the bandits, the suspects opened fire at them. The police returned the fire killing one of the suspects, while his accomplice escaped. The dead suspect had been identified as Jameel, the police said.

The body was sent to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for post- mortem.

SUICIDE: A young man committed suicide in Soldier Bazaar on Monday.

The police said Ghulam Mustafa, aged 23, a bakery worker, shot himself in the head on the premises of the bakery at Guru Mandir.

The young man shot himself with the pistol of a security guard of the bakery in a restroom at the bakery.

The police said the guard was away and had left his pistol behind.

The young man left a note asking the bakery owner to send his body to his his native Azad Jammu and Kashmir and give his salary to his brother. Mustafa lived with his brother Amjad Iqbal in Karachi.

Three days ago, Mustafa had received a letter from his wife telling him she was separating from him. The body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

FISHED OUT: The body of a young man was recovered from the sea on Monday.

The police said the body of Zahoor Ahmed, aged 35, was fished out from the sea in Jackson police limits.

An ID card carrying an address of Nishter Road was found in his pocket, but the address turned out to be incorrect.

The body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

ARMS RECOVERED: A statement issued by the police on Monday said during an operation in the “No-go” areas, the police seized a sizable quantity of arms which were in the possession of MQM (H) workers.

The arms and ammunition seized included 12 Kalashnikovs, 10 pistols, two revolvers, one mouser, four handgrenades and 4,242 cartridges.
