THATTA, March 2: Despite adoption of a unanimous resolution against the Thal canal by the Sindh Assembly, the federal government authorities have issued directives to complete the project in seven months — a month earlier than its stipulated period.
This was said by the leader of opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, while talking to newsmen at a marriage function held here on Sunday.
He warned the People’s Party Parliamentarians would adopt all ways and means and put up the case before the people to stop work on the project if the will of the Sindh Assembly was not honoured.
The Sindh PPP chief said after adoption of the resolution against the canal project, the Sindh government was considering to refer the matter to the Council of Common Interests.
He said the Thal canal was a sensitive issue and it was a good omen that the Sindh Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution against the project.
Mr Khuhro said tail-end districts — Thatta and Badin — and other areas of the province were badly hit by shortage of irrigation water for the last couple of years.
He feared non-flow of water downstream Kotri for the last six years, which had ruined the delta, and construction of more dams and projects on the River Indus, would render Sindh land barren.
About the alleged police excesses, political victimization, usurpation of district resources and abuse of authority by the Shirazi group, the PPP leader said the rally staged against the Shirazis in the town on Saturday, in which thousands of people participated, was an eye opener to them, adding his party would extend cooperation to people being victimized by the Shirazis.
