HYDERABAD, March 1: Hundreds of students of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, staged a sit-in outside the vice-chancellor office to protest against what they called anti-students policies of the vice-chancellor.

The sit-in, staged under the banner of the Shagrid Ittihad, started at 5:00pm on Thursday and continued till early Friday morning.

The protesters raised slogans against the vice-chancellor and called for resolving their problems.

The students demanded withdrawal of “term back” policy, reintroduction of old timings at the campus, increase in the number of point buses and permission to avail self-granted leave in case of emergency.

They also demanded to hold special supplementary examinations and arrange all Pakistan study tours.

A heavy contingent of the Kotri taluka police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

Talking to the students, Shagrid Ittihad president Asif Memon said students had staged three protest sit-ins since January but none of their problems had been resolved.

He said students would continue their protest till acceptance of their demands.

At about 4:00am on Friday, the vice-chancellor held a meeting with a delegation of students.

The vice-chancellor is said to have granted some concessions in the percentage of attendance, self-granted leave and holding of supplementary examinations but refused to withdraw the term back policy.
