ICC to examine Kenya’s victory
JOHANNESBURG, Feb 26: The International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit (ACU) will have a closer look at Kenya’s stunning World Cup win over Sri Lanka, sources said on Wednesday.
The ACU, headed by former London police chief Paul Condon, will be given the tapes of Monday’s match at Nairobi which Kenya won by 53 runs by the official brodcasters.
“Yes, the tapes have been asked for,” the source said. “I believe it is the first match in this World Cup where the tapes have been summoned.”
The ACU, formed two years ago after the match-fixing scandal broke, promised in its initial report that it would ensure a corruption-free World Cup.
It has also said that a random selection of matches will be reviewed routinely.
An ICC spokesman said the tape was provided to the ACU as a matter of course.
“The ACU does not ask for tapes, but receives tapes for all international matches played anywhere in the world,” he said.
“And the ACU does not comment on operational matters.”
Sri Lanka, who romped through their first three matches, were shot out for 157 off 45 overs after chasing Kenya’s modest 210 for nine.
It was the third biggest upset in World Cup history after the Kenyans defeated the West Indies in 1996 and Bangladesh shocked eventual finalists Pakistan in 1999.—AFP
