RAWALPINDI, Feb 26: A man was shot dead by robbers, who were fleeing in a stolen taxi, on Islamabad Highway early on Wednesday, police said.
Zahidul Haq, a resident of Amarpura, was heading home along with his wife in his car (IDH-444) when a cab (LHR-5909), in which three persons were travelling, hit his car from behind. The police said Zahid got out of his car and protested with the driver. While he was talking to the driver, one of the men sitting in the taxi pulled out his pistol and shot Zahid.
On seeing her husband seriously injured, the woman fainted. The injured man died as he was being shifted to the hospital, the police said.
According to the police, the alleged killers had snatched the cab from its driver and were fleeing in it when they hit Zahid’s car. The killers are yet to be arrested. Zahid’s wife was shifted to the hospital where she was still unconscious.
RUN OVER: One person was killed after being run over by an oil-tanker at Tarnol on Tuesday.
Hazrat Ali, son of Mohammad Azam, was hit by an oil-tanker, driven by Ghulam Hussain, while he was crossing the road, the police said.
BURGLARIES: Three burglaries were committed and two vehicles stolen from different parts of Rawalpindi, police said on Wednesday.
Raja Asghar Hussain, a resident of Chaklala, told the airport police that he had gone to his village after locking his house. When he returned on Tuesday, he found the compound wall of his house had been razed and the locks of the rooms broken. On listing the households, he found gold jewellery and Rs50,000 stolen.
In another incident, burglars broke into the house of Mohammad Asif in Westridge and made off with a television set, tape recorder, Rs5,000, clothes and one pistol.
Saeed Anwar Hussain’s car (AJKF-903) was stolen from outside a private hospital situated near The Mall while Azhar Masood’s motorbike (RIX-2081) was lifted from Raja Bazaar.
Meanwhile, the customs mobile staff arrested one person and seized a large quantity of foreign-made cloth and spare parts that were being smuggled to Rawalpindi from Peshawar.
The customs authorities said information was received by the collector customs, Mehmood Alam, that some people were trying to smuggle certain items in a bus. A raiding party, led by deputy superintendent Sohail Qureshi, was constituted which intercepted a bus (R-7875) coming from Peshawar on G.T. Road near Hassanabdal. On searching the vehicle, they found 12,000 metres of cloth and a huge quantity of spare parts.Two injured in various incidents
APP ADDS: Two persons were injured in separate incidents, police said on Wednesday.
Abdul Jaleel was shot and injured by Raza, Fareed, and Amanullah when he demanded rent from the tenants of his house at F-7/1. He received bullet injuries in his left leg and stomach.
He was referred to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences where his condition is stated to be out of danger.
Police claimed to have arrested all the three accused and started further investigation.
In the second incident, a woman was injured by his brother when he attacked her with knife.
The woman suffered severe injuries, however, the police reached the spot on time and overpowered him. The accused is said to be a lunatic.
However, the police have registered the case under the relevant section and started investigations.
