NICOSIA, Feb 26: UN Secretary General Kofi Annan presented Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders with the latest draft of his plan to reunite the Mediterranean island as he kicked off a peace mission here on Wednesday.
Mr Annan said he expected “real movement” on Thursday, after holding hour-long talks with both Greek Cypriot president-elect Tassos Papadopoulos and then Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
The UN chief aims to cajole the two sides into accepting the plan by the UN-imposed deadline of Friday.
Annan met the pair separately at the residence of the UN chief of mission, Zbigniew Wlosowicz, in a UN-manned buffer zone. —AFP
