Murder accused dies of ‘police torture’

BAHAWALPUR, Feb 24: A murder accused on Monday was allegedly tortured to death by Tarinda Muhammad Panah police near Liaquatpur.

The police arrested Dur Muhammad, Muhammad Iqbal and Sher Zaman who had allegedly murdered Irrigation Department’s employee Shabbir Ahmad on Sunday last after looting him. Although the arrested accused confessed to their crime, yet the police tortured to death Dur Muhammad of Jamaldinwali and challaned his two accomplices in an Arms Act case. Parents of the deceased demanded that ASI Iqbal should be booked for killing their son. They also refused to receive the body from police.

TRANSFERS BANNED: The district government has imposed a ban on the transfer of its officials in all departments which will remain in force till April 30, 2003.

The District Nazim said here on Monday that the order would not be applicable on transfers made on administrative and complaint grounds.

He said the order had been issued in the larger public interest as a large number of officials were vying for the posts of their choices. For this purpose, they were exerting political pressure and were often found missing from their seats due to which the people were suffering, he added.

TERMINATED: At least 120 workcharged employees of the Buildings Department have been terminated from their service.

The sacked workers have been demanding their salaries for the last five months.

They asked the authorities concerned to reinstate them and pay their salaries within two weeks otherwise they would not allow the officials to enter the DO building.

BURNT ALIVE: A youth burnt himself to death while his beloved sustained serious burn wounds on Sunday in Basti Noor Kot.

Muhammad Siddique and Dam Bibi wanted to contract marriage, but their parents did not allow them as a result of which they put their bodies on fire by sprinkling kerosene. Siddique died on the spot while the condition of Dam Bibi was described as critical in hospital.
