Legislation against obscene ads urged

Published February 25, 2003

SUKKUR, Feb 24: Speakers at a media workshop, organized by the Aurat Foundation at a hotel on Sunday, unanimously passed a resolution calling upon the Parliament for legislation against the negative/vulgar display of women in advertisements on TV/newspapers and private channels, which it observed has been growing day by day in the country.

The workshop noticed that the much unlimited display of women was against all norms of ethics and morality.

The speaker, while complementing the government measures to enhance women’s representation in local bodies and Parliament, noticed that only the kith and kin of politicians had been brought forward thus making little impact on the political scenario.

They called for legislation against the negative display of women in newspaper advertisements and the electronic media.

Some of the speakers also appreciated the steps of the government in increasing the number of women in local bodies and assemblies, which was also termed a big revolutionary shift from the past.

They said that the former government remained engaged in lip service, but the military regime had proved a boon for women as they had been mostly neglected in the past.

The workshop took serious notice of a nine-year-old girl, Hasina, who was forcibly wedded and later raped by her husband.
