JHANG, Feb 23: Kotwali police have registered a case against an Elite Force head constable for allegedly thrashing an assistant professor of Government College Faisalabad at a public place a few days ago.

Prof Khalid Mehmood, who hails from Jhang, travels daily to Faisalabad, where he teaches Maths at the GC. On Friday, he came to Ayub Chowk in Jhang Saddar to board a wagon to Faisalabad.

Head Constable Ghazanfer Mirali, who owns a few wagons including the one boarded by the professor (MNV-7993), allegedly demanded of the professor double the normal fare for sitting on the front seat.

The professor’s refusal to pay the extra money led to an exchange of hot words, which culminated in the cop dragging the professor out of the wagon and giving him a thrashing in the presence of hundreds of onlookers.

The professor fell unconscious and was admitted to the DHQ hospital in Jhang. The Kotwali police later registered a case against the head constable and three other persons.

The Jhang DPO has also ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed the Jhang headquarters SP to submit the report at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Professors and Lecturers’ Association (PPLA) Faisalabad division has condemned the incident at an emergency meeting and urged the authorities to take stern action against the culprits.
