Pope stresses ‘every effort’ to avoid war

VATICAN CITY, Feb 22: Pope John Paul urged British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Saturday to make “every effort” to avoid going to war against Iraq.

The pope made his appeal for peace in a 30-minute meeting which brought him face to face with a leading protagonist of a military assault on Baghdad for the first time. “The Pope hoped that, in finding a solution to the grave situation in Iraq, every effort be made to avoid new divisions in the world,” said the Vatican.—AFP
