MITHI, Feb 20: Though some part of the Thar received moderate rain on Monday but it would not benefit its agricultural sector as it could best be described as a freak phenomena, experts told Dawn on Thursday.
Grass and other plants, they said, would not sprout over the cool earth here as the winter has not ended here.
The rain, which they said was not seasonal, would not be helpful for cultivation.
Meanwhile, scores of people living in various villages, contacted by this correspondent, said that the rain, instead of bringing any relief, resulted in making their life more miserable.
Thousands of their cattlehead, they said, had perished in the torrential downpour and gale-force cold winds, adding that a large number of the already weakened animals had become prone to diseases after the recent rain.
They criticized the local veterinary department, saying that it was oblivious to their plight in the wake of the recent rain.
Many of the herdsmen, contacted by this correspondent, demanded of the government to initiate a campaign to vaccinate their livestock.
ROAD DAMAGED: The recent rain has badly damaged the 50- kilometre-long Mithi-Naukot road and it is likely to become unserviceable if not repaired on an emergency basis.
This correspondent observed on Thursday that the poor-quality road had been carved in many places by channels, still carrying flash flood water, flowing down from the elevated parts of sand dunes.
The sides of the road had also been badly eroded because of the inability of the engineers of the highway department to take into account the flow of flash floods along or over the road.
No efforts had been mounted to remove the dense deposits of sand, left by the flowing water on long patches of the road, hampering the traffic movement.
