Al Jarrar tipped to win feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Feb 19: A competitive card of five events has been charted out for the Lahore Gymkhana races to be held on Thursday.

The midweek gymkhana races scheduled for Wednesday were postponed to Thursday due to rain.

The feature and fourth event, the Nowshera Plate class VII division V-A handicap race, has a dozen runners. Of them three come into reckoning. They are: Al Jarrar, Triple M and Morning Bird. By virtue of his facile victory on his previous outing last week the five-year-old grey Al Jarrar has an edge over the others.

The fields in other four races are bigger and packed with form animals, which make winner picking a difficult task for the punters.

The going will be heavy which will suit the runners, who have liking for such a track or those carrying light-weight. In all, 83 runners are to compete in five events, barring last- minute withdrawals.

All events will be contested over the sprinting distance of 1000m. The first race will be held at 2 pm.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) has announced that the Pakistan Derby 2003 to be held on March 2 will carry a purse of rupees 800,000. The winner will receive rupees 500,000 alongwith a gold cup and the colts and fillies placed second and third will get rupees 200,000 and rupees 100,000. This is a term race for four-year-old Pakistani colts and fillies.

An LRC notification issued here said the winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Gold Cup will get rupees 200,000 in cash while those placed second and third will receive rupees 100,000 and 50000. A handicap race for class I, II & III, will be held on derby day.

The stake-money for the National Breeders Cup will be rupees 125,000, rupees 60000 and rupees 30000 for the winner and the second and third placed, respectively.
