KARACHI, Feb 19: A committee, comprising two retired district and sessions judges, set up by the Provincial Ombudsman, Justice Haziqul Khairi, has started conducting “surprise raids” at police stations across Sindh to monitor any illegal detention.

The committee members will submit their report to the Provincial Ombudsman, who in case of any illegal detention, would take action against the concerned police official, Justice Haziqul Khairi said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a radio news conference, he said he was working for redressing the grievances of the people. The office of the Ombudsman, he said, takes notice of complaints of corruption and other malpractices by the officers and staff of the Sindh government and remedial action is also taken.

Suo moto action was taken in case of Wazir Mansion where renovation work was undertaken later on, he said.

He said since its establishment in 1991, the Provincial Ombudsman office received about 80,000 complaints, of which 71,831 had been disposed of.

While 13,422 people were granted relief, some 4,637 complaints were dismissed. There are 2,000 cases pending at present, he added.

He said he also took suo moto notice of irregularities in Malir Development Authority Karachi, and got freezed Rs 1.5 billion in bank accounts. —PPI
