Three killed in shootout with police

By Our Correspondent

GUJRAT, Feb 14: Kharian police killed three people in an “encounter with outlaws” near Golarriala on the Eid day.

Kharian DSP Tufail Mirza told newsmen that acting on a tip-off that three “notorious criminals” including a fugitive Malik alias Malika would come to Golarriala on Eid, a heavy contingent of police and the Elite Force besieged the area. Asked to surrender, the “criminals” opened fire on law-enforcement agents, who returned their fire, he said.

The crossfire continued for more than two hours and left three outlaws dead in its wake, he said, adding that the dead were later identified as Malik alias Malika, Afzal alias Phali and Asif alias Asoo.

Police recovered three Klashnikovs and nine hand-grenades besides cartridges from the place of encounter, he said. One of the dead, Malik, was wanted by Rawalpindi, Mandi Bahauddin and Gujrat police for a number of crimes of a heinous nature, he said, adding that Malik had murdered two persons and injured three others in the Kunjah police lock-up two years ago.

Police had been carrying Malik to Rawalpindi by train a few months ago when his men attacked the police party near Domeli and got him freed, he concluded.

10,000 POLICE: Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that his government will recruit some 10,000 policemen and equip them with the latest technology.

Speaking at a press conference in the Zahoor Elahi House here on the Eid Day, he said implementation of police reforms had already been started. He said police pickets would be set up at a distance of every 20km to curb crime.

He said his government had decided to promulgate an ordinance whereby the persons purchasing stolen items would be awarded punishment equal to that awarded to thieves and dacoits.

He said the Zakat and Ushr committees would be reorganized throughout the province.

He said that criminals would be dealt with an iron hand. The deterioration of law and order would come to an end only through new legislation awarding strictest of punishments to criminals.

He said the Government Zamindar College Gujrat would be upgraded and converted into a university.
