THATTA, Feb 14: Legislators belonging to the People’s Party Parliamentarians on Friday called upon Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to take notice of misuse of power and worsening law and order situation during his visit to Thatta on Feb 19.

Criticizing nepotism and favouritism and misappropriation of funds in the district, local PPP leaders, including Babu Ghulam Hussain, Arbab Wazir Ahmed Memon, Dr Ghulam Qadir Palejo, MPAs Sassui Palejo and Humera Alwani, while talking to newsmen here on Friday said that all the available resources had been diverted to the pockets of favourites.

They also criticized registration of cases against the PPP workers, saying that they had been politically victimized by instituting false and fictitious cases against them.

Accusing the Shirazi group of vicitimizing their political opponents, they said that police and other state machinery was being used to harass the PPP workers at the behest of the Shirazi group while robberies and other crimes went unchecked.

Contracts of various development schemes, they said, were being awarded to favourites and were, in fact, being awarded through the district Nazim’s office.

Referring to the school management committees, they said that Rs61.2 million, entrusted by the World Bank for the supply of furniture and fixtures for schools, had been misappropriated.

They said that while the Zakat did not fall within the ambit of the district government, the District Nazim was doling out Zakat to his favourites while depriving the deserving people of their legitimate rights.

They demanded of the Prime Minister to institute an impartial inquiry into the state of affairs to discourage corruption and other malpractice.

KILLED: A young man, Ghulam Mustafa Jokhio, was killed after he fell down from the roof of a bus as it sped near Jungshahi.

In another incident, Pehalwan Khaman drowned in the KDA Canal after being trapped into a whirlpool.

Meanwhile, Gul Hassan, son of Daroo Bati, was killed after being accidentally hit by a bullet while cleaning his gun. He is reported to have died on the spot.
