KARACHI, Feb 14: As a result of advancement in research and technology in the medical field, complete restoration of lost hearing ability has now become possible in Pakistan.
This was stated by Dr Fasihullah Mir, an ENT surgeon, while speaking at a programme on “Awareness Towards ENT Diseases and Adoption of Precautionary Measures” at a school in North Nazimabad on Friday.
Dr Fasih said the hearing disability was caused by a imbalance due to the stiffness of bones in the ears. “This problem among children is caused by viral infections to mothers during pregnancy,” he added.
He said the problem among children could now be diagnosed through acudestic emission or bera tests soon after a child’s birth.
He advised mothers not to take antibiotics unnecessarily during at least six initial months of pregnancy because of Rubella and viral infection.
About diagnosis of the disease, he recommended that if a newborn does not react to the voice of mother, he should be taken to an ENT specialist for check-up.
The function was attended by representatives of NGOs, teachers and others.—PPI
