MUZAFFARABAD, Feb 11: A man, who was wounded in the indiscriminate Indian shelling on Monday, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, while two more persons were injured after their vehicle was hit by firing from the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC), police officials said.

“Sikandar Khan, 60, who was injured on Monday in the Falakan village in the lower Neelum Valley, died in a military hospital on Tuesday,” a police official told Dawn.

Khan and five other persons, including two women, were injured by the intense Indian shelling of the civilian populations in the valley, located northeast of the capital of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir, along the LoC.

The Indian troops, the official said, resumed shelling on Tuesday without any provocation, targeting the tehsil headquarters, Athmuqam, and adjoining villages in the lower Neelum Valley, besides hitting the valley’s main road.

According to the official, a passenger jeep (AJKE-7788), en route to Kundal Shahi from Athmuqam, was hit near the Palang village, as a result of which its driver, Mohammad Maqbool, and a passenger, Javed Iqbal, were injured.

They were taken to the local military hospital.

Indian troops frequently target the main road in the Neelum Valley, which has been closed by the authorities for traffic for quite some time.

The road is also in the range of India’s small arms fire, but some drivers risk their lives by plying their vehicles and become victim of the enemy shelling.
