INS fixes bail bond limit for Pakistanis

By Fakhr Ahmad

LOS ANGELES, Feb 6: The Immigration and Naturalization Service has fixed the bail bond limit at between US $1,500-2,500 for releasing people who have some problems in their status and come for registration, lawyers said on Wednesday.

The third and other groups (of countries) are lucky in the sense that INS has now set a benchmark of between $1,500-2,500 as compared with what happened to the first and second group who faced an inconsistent bail amount of between $5,000-10,000 to even up to $100,000,” said Malek Shibley, an Orange County-based Arab lawyer and a leading activist of Council on American Islamic Relations.

Although, there has been no announcement by the INS, lawyers are saying they have got clear verbal indications from the INS that between $1,500-2,500 is the limit fixed for the bail bond. Another leading lawyer, Amy Ghosh told Dawn the low bail amount had been fixed so that more and more Pakistanis and Bangladeshis could come forward and register.
