SHIKARPUR: Scholarships to help poor students introduced

SHIKARPUR, Feb 5: The Ministry of Religious Affairs has introduced the Mora scholarship scheme to assist poor and deserving students financially in their higher education.

An amount of Rs2.16 million has been released by the ministry for Shikarpur district under the scheme for the first instalment of 2003.

The District Zakat Committee has submitted its annual plan to the ministry demanding Rs1.8 million more as a stipend for 150 students admitted to various technical institutes of the district.

The district Zakat officer, Din Mohammad Shaikh, said the deserving students would be awarded monthly scholarships of Rs450 from primary to middle classes, Rs672 from Class IX to Class X, Rs2,250 from intermediate to graduation, Rs4,500 to post-graduates, and Rs5,244 for higher studies under the said scheme.

He said that each student would be provided Rs1,000 per month as technical education stipend, and after completing his education, each student would be given Rs5,000 to enable them to start their business.

He has advised the EDO, education, to send a list of the students admitted to schools, colleges, and technical institutes to the District Zakat and Ushr Committee.

SUSPENDED: The SHO, Stuart Ganj police, and six constables were suspended for stopping a taxi driver, which resulted in the death of a woman passenger.

The driver was taking a patient, Amir Zadi, from Kashmore to the Larkana hospital, who died as a result of the policemen stopping the taxi driver and demanding Rs1,000 as bribe from him.

The DPO, Shikarpur, Abdul Khaliq Shaikh, ordered registration of an FIR against the policemen under section 319 PPC. However, they were released on bail.

JIRGA: A jirga to solve the Mahar-Jatoi dispute, postponed twice earlier, has been scheduled to be held on Feb 7 at the Circuit House, Sukkur.

It was decided at a meeting held between Sardar Ali Gohar Khan Mahar and Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Jatoi at Mirpur Mathelo on Tuesday.
