PM to address AJK assembly today

By Tariq Naqash

MUZAFFARABAD, Feb 4: Kashmiris are set to observe Kashmir Solidarity Day on Wednesday to express their support for the people struggling for freedom in the Indian-held Kashmir.

Rallies, public meetings, seminars and other functions would be held across the AJK where the participants would demonstrate their undeviating commitment to the legitimate rights of the Kashmiris duly acknowledged and sanctified in the resolutions of United Nations Security Council, passed more than five decades ago.

Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali will address the joint session of the AJK Legislative Assembly and the AJK Council to mark the day which is being observed on Feb 5 throughout the world since 1990.

Mr Jamali’s first visit to Azad Kashmir as PM is believed to reiterate the diplomatic, moral and political support of Islamabad to the just cause of the Kashmiris, officials here said.

The AJK Legislative Assembly’s acting speaker, Mohammad Sanaullah Qadri, who would preside over the joint session, told reporters that before Mr Jamali’s address, leaders of the house (AJK prime minister) and the opposition in the Legislative Assembly will also speak.

Officials said Mr Jamali was also scheduled to meet different delegations in the state capital, comprising the representatives of the AJK chapter of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, heads of political parties as well as Kashmiri refugees, and those displaced by Indian shelling.

In Islamabad, the prime minister will attend a gathering of politicians and Kashmiri leaders in the Convention Centre, where awards would be given to those who have contributed significantly to the Kashmir cause.

Other events of the day will include the formation of symbolic human chains in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan at six points linking the two territories.

The AJK government has also declared a public holiday on Wednesday.
