HYDERABAD, Feb 4: Land in Thar should be allotted to the landless peasants of the area instead of distributing it among the members of law enforcement agencies and bureaucrats.

The demand was made at a meeting of the Sindh Small Growers Association (SSGA), held here the other day.

The meeting also demanded that Rs200 million dues of the surcharge tax should be paid to the sugarcane growers by the sugar mills of Sindh.

It called for making daily recovery report of the sugar mills public to ensure payment of quality premium.

The meeting appealed the farmers to attend the conference, being held in Badin on Feb 9, for highlighting the problems of the growers.

The meeting was presided over by president of the SSGA, Deewan Arumal.

Meanwhile, the Sindh Hari Tehrik has opposed the grant of 700 acres of land in Sindh to the displaced people of the Tarbela Dam, saying it is tantamount to adding insult to injuries of Sindh people.

In a joint statement, issued here the other day, the president of the Tehrik, Arif Junejo, and others said the people of Sindh would not accept the decision of the Board of Revenue and Land Utilization Department in this regard.

They said that on the one hand, the people of Sindh were committing suicide due to unemployment and, on the other, land of the province was being given to outsiders.

The peasant leaders said that no minister or bureaucrat had the right to dole out Sindh’s land to outsiders just.

They appealed the people of Sindh to defend every inch of their land.

DATE EXTENDED: The director, admissions, University of Sindh, has extended the date for submitting forms for admission to MA English, evening programme, up to Feb 19. He said the date for submitting forms for admission to MSc Rural Development had also been extended up to Feb 15.
