Blast kills five Afghans

By Our Staff Correspondent

QUETTA, Feb 2: Five Afghan army personnel on Sunday were killed in a landmine blast in Chahar Burjuk area while the governor of Nimroz, a southern Afghanistan’s province close to Pakistani border, narrowly escaped the explosion.

“A senior commander, Sher Mohammad, also died in the blast,” a spokesmen for the Nimroz governor, Mohammad Sarwar, confirmed to newsmen over telephone from Zaranj.

It was an anti-tank mine which went off some 120km west of the provincial headquarters of Zaranj, he said, adding that Governor Mohammad Karim Brahvi was coming back to Zaranj after supervising a poppy destroying operation in Chahar Burjuk.

On its way home, land cruiser of the governor passed safely over the mine, but the landmine hit another vehicle carrying guards of the governor, killing the five army personnel.
