Three-way battle likely for 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Feb 1: The 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan for four-year-old fillies to be run over a mile at the Racecourse on Sunday looks an open affair.
With a purse of rupees 350,000 to the winner alongwith a cup valued Rs.16000, there are eight runners in the field after the declaration of riders for this term race. All will carry eight stones 12 pounds. The second and third placed will receive rupees Rs 116,666 and Rs 58334.
Of them four Democracy, Red Storm, Feel the Freedom and Daring Eagle come into reckoning on their recent forme.
On top is Democracy, the beautifully bred daughter of Cisco Well-Let Get Going, who relishes the distance and stands out on classification.
But the filly was a big disappointment in the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktum Cup run over 1400 metres on Jan 24 last. She ran prominently behind the front runners but packed up badly in the last 400 metres to finally finish off the frame. Red Storm finished third in the same race. Daring Eagle and Feel The Freedom ran impressively on the same day winning comfortably over 1200 metres clocking excellent timings.
The main supporting and fourth event, the Anarkali Cup, a term race for three-year-old fillies to be contested over 1200 metres has only six acceptors. On her recent performances, Fair Play, from Re Play out-of-Lust For Love, is in with solid credentials. She has won three races, placed second and third once in her five previous outings. Despite carrying 9-7 on her back she should win the race.
The second supporting event, the Azad Kashmir Cup over a mile seems a battle between Great Grandy, Blu’s Wendy and Great King. This is class I, II and III combined handicap race and the sixth in racing order. On form the first named two should fight it out.
The Nero Cup to be contested over a mile has seven starters. The four-year-old gelding Flight Alert is an outstanding performer and should hack the field.
Dizzy height and Blue Dawn are the next best, who may fight for lesser remunerative positions. This will be the third race of the day. A card of seven events, four to be run over 1200 metres and three over a mile will be decided in the afternoon. The first race will be held at 12 noon.
