Lahore, Vehari advance to quarterfinals

LAHORE, Jan 30: Lahore, Toba Tek Singh, Vehari and Faisalabad also made the last eight in the fourth Punjab  Under- 16  Inter-District Hockey Championship at the conclusion of  pool matches at the National Hockey Stadium on Thursday.

Four teams, Okara, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur and Sargodha had already qualified for the quarterfinals starting from Friday.

Lahore thrashed Hafizabad 6-0 with four goals from Waqas Ahmed.

Waqas started the proceedings with his first two goals in the 15th and 21st minute followed by two quick goals by Junaid Riaz within seconds of each other in the 29th minute. to make it 4-0. Waqas completed the tally with goals in the 34th and 58th minutes.

Vehari sailed into the second round from pool D, beating Mandi Bahauddin 5-0 thanks to three goals by Ali Muqaddas.

Vehari opened their account through Muhammad Amin who  fired home a goal in the 4th minute. Ali struck his first in the  16th, Khurram Shahzad made it 3-0 in the 19th minute. Ali scored  back to back goals in the 25th and 37th minute to seal the fate of the match.

A  match-winner by Baqir gave Faisalabad a close 1-0 win against Jehlum and put them in the quarterfinals from Pool “F”.

Baqir scored the all-important goal in the 26th minute with a field effort.

Last year runners-up Toba Tek Singh defeated a strong Attock side 7-2 to qualify from Pool “B”.

 Khurram Shahzad (4th and 46th minutes), Zeeshan Akram  (6th and 31st minutes) scored two goals each for the winners. Mohammad Usman (38th  minute), Mohammad Tabib (42nd minute) and Muhammad Rizwan (48th minute) also scored a goal each.

For  the losers, Sheraz struck both goals in the 41st and 48th minutes.

Bahawalpur who had already qualified for the next round, brushed aside Rawalpindi 3-1 in its last pool match.

Bahawalpur made a flying start, scoring three goals by  the 17th minute through Shahzad Gulzar (7th minute), Mohammad  Abid (15th minute) and again Shahzad (17th minute).

Rawalpindi scored the solitary goal through Noman Akhtar in the 43rd minute.

Three goals by Kashif, included two decisive, helped Multan earn a hard fought 3-2 win against Chakwal.

Kashif  gave Multan 1-0 lead by scoring a goal in the 20th minute. Chakwal staged a comeback and took 2-1 lead when  Naeem Abbas (36th minute) and Aamir Sharif (46th minute) scored a  goal each. Kashif again brought Multan back in the match, scoring back to back  goals in the 49th and 50th minutes to turn  the  tables over the rivals.

Three goals  by  Farhan  Aziz  steered Pakpattan to an impressive 8-1 win against Lodhran.

Farhan struck goals in the 16th, 28th and 37th minutes. Mohammad Waseem (12th , 29th minutes) scored two goals.  Adnan Aslam(24th minute), Zahid Hussain (35th minute) and Azeem Sabeel (42nd minute) added a goal each.

Husnain Hayat scored the lone goal for the losers in the  18th minute.

Gujranwala beat Jhang 3-1.

Zakaullah (27th minute), Israr Ahmad (32nd minute) and Shabbir Hussain (44th minute) scored a goal each, for the winning team.

For Jhang, Ali Husnain goal the consolation goal in the 51st minute.

Quarterfinals’ programme:

Friday: Okara v Muzaffargarh at 10am; Toba Tek Singh v Bahawalpur at 11.45am.

Saturday:  Lahore v Sargodha at 10.30am; Vehari v  Faisalabad  at 12.15am.
