Akbar dumps topseed Mahir


KARACHI, Jan 29: Akbar Patudi caused the biggest of the competition when he dumped top seed Mahir Nisar of Lahore in the straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of men’s singles of the Westbury Open tennis championship at Modern Club on Wednesday.

Akbar dominated the match and forced his opponent to commit errors time and again. Akbar conceded only two games in two sets and finished the match in only 40 minutes.

Another promising Karachi player Adnan Khan defeated Ali Hasan Bhagat in the other quarterfinal 6-4, 6-4 to join Akbar into the semifinals.

Mateen Arif outlasted Nasir Mushtaq 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to advance into the final of the Under-14 final in a clash that went to the full distance,

Nasir rattled Mateen in the first winning 6-3. Mateen showed fighting qualities in the second and levelled the match by just dropping a game in the second.

There was a struggle for supremacy in the deciding third set but it was Mateen who came out winner.

Men’s singles quarterfinals: Akbar Pataudi bt Mahir Nisar 6-1, 6-1; Adnan Khan bt Ali Hasan 6-4,6-4

Under-14 semifinals: Mateen Arif bt Nasir Mushtaq 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.—PPI
