Qazi warns govt against support to US on Iraq

By Our Staff Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Jan 29: Parliamentary leader of Muttahida Majlis- i-Amal (MMA) in the National Assembly and Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmad Wednesday warned the government of mass protests if it supported the United States in its war on Iraq.

He was speaking at a reception arranged in his honour by the MNA Mohammad Hanif Abbasi here.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad said the nuclear weapons were just an excuse and the actual purpose of the United States was to control all the resources of the Muslim countries. He urged the government to make its position clear on Iraq issue.

“If the government opted to support the US, the MMA would protest against it, he warned. He said the UN should be given time and authority to resolve the issue.

He said the MMA leaders also had meetings with the ambassadors of Germany, France, European Union, Russia and China to appreciate their governments for not supporting the US stance. We also asked them to expedite their efforts to prove American pro-war policies wrong and stop it from attacking Iraq, he told the gathering.

The MMA leader said all the people were opposed to General Musharraf and his policies, but he was still sticking to the presidency and the army high command. “He has dishonoured 140 million people, violated the constitution and challenged the verdict of the people,” he added. He asked the government to change its foreign and domestic policies.

Qazi said the victory of several MMA candidates in the by- elections had proved that the people had rejected General Musharraf and his hand-picked government of Zafarullah Jamali.

“General Musharraf has sold away the sovereignty of the country by giving American FBI a free hand in Pakistan. People are totally opposed to such servile policies.

They demand independence in all decisions,” he added.

He said the US was the biggest terrorist in the world today.
