MITHI, Jan 26: The Tharparkar district council has demanded of the authorities for adequate measures to preserve the Chelhar Fort.
In a resolution, moved by Rijhumal, the members of the district council demanded of the archaeology department to take measures for the preservation and maintenance of the historical fort.
Also called the Fort of the Mirs, the archaeological site is situated in the Chelhar town.
Expressing concern over the decrepit condition of the historical monument, they said, that the local people were contributing in its destruction by stripping it of its bricks.
During the sessions of council, held the other day, the district council passed about 50 resolutions and demanded of the relevant authorities to sanction water supply schemes for different villages.
A number of members of the district council, complained that they had not been paid TA/DA for the past couple of months.
The members of the Tharparkar district council said that they were finding it difficult to afford the fare for reaching Mithi from remote villages.
