Mediocre card for today’s races

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 25: A small card of five events comprising mediocre fields has been chalked out for the 17th Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the Racecourse on Sunday afternoon.

The holding of three consecutive race-day meetings  last week on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday had an adverse affect on the number of entries for Sunday’s (Jan 26) Winter Meeting.

A considerably reduced number of acceptors were left-in after scratching on Saturday because most of the owners preferred to give rest to their runners, who have taken part in races earlier during the week.

As a result the Shadman Plate for class IV division I and division II and the Kotri Plate for class I, II and III combined have been declared void for paucity of runners.

Ironically not a single entry was received for the Sahiwal Plate, a term race for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies (Maidens) to be contested over 1200 metres.

All five races will be run over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres, the first to go under starter’s order at 1 pm.

The feature event, a class V division 11, has a dozen runners barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them three come into reckoning, namely, Familiar Master, Puma Star and My Fantasy. They are the only ones appearing on board in their recent outings. The remaining nine have come down in the weight scales considerably but have shown no form yet. The winner should be from the first named three. On form Familiar Master with a good rider in the saddle should click. This will be the fourth race in racing order.
