PPP plans campaign for Okara tenants

Published January 25, 2003

OKARA, Jan 24: The People’s Party has announced country-wide protest and sit-ins in support of tenants’ struggle to get ownership rights of the land they had been cultivating for several years.

This was stated by Punjab PPP president and opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly Qasim Zia while speaking to the military farm tenants in 10/4-L on Friday evening.

He said the PPP MPAs would resign if they failed to get ownership rights for the tenants.

He said the PPP would start their campaign within a couple of weeks on the directive of party chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

Mr Zia said manhandling of tenants by the law enforcement agencies has cast a negative impact about army in the public eye.

Meanwhile, the law enforcers did not intervene and stayed about a kilometre away from the venue of the meeting.

Earlier, Mr Zia told the participants in a workers’ convention to get united as the LFO had divided the nation.

He said the party leadership did not believe in criticism for the sake of criticism. The PPP would support the government policies aimed at betterment of the common man, he added.
